Heyford Athletic Kicked off the 126th final of the Jersey Cup on a warm sunny April afternoon. Woodford United in all blue had to stifle an early attack from a spritely Heyford Athletic side playing in yellow and black. A second attack by Heyford had Ashley Baxter the Woodford keeper mi ss kick the ball resulting in a returned overhead kick that was saved by the grateful Baxter. Heyford settled into the match with some slick passing moves . Woodford trying to play the long ball game to a lone striker, who was easily dealt with by a powerful Heyford defence. Fifteen minutes into the game a corner awarded to Heyford was converted by Matt Blenford into the goal off the crossbar 1-0. Heyford spurred on by the goal pressured the Woodford defence which held firm. A foul on Heyfords Matt Blenford produced a free kick that was headed low past the upright. Woodford now tried to pass the ball forward and won themselves a corner that was cleared to the edge of the area, the following shot was easily saved by Dan Smith in the Heyford goal. Thirty five minutes into the fixture the heat started to have an effect on the game, slowing play down, Woodford reverted to the long balls, that were easily picked out by the tall Heyford defenders. A solo run by Heyford's Matt Gardner looked promising but a scuffed shot ended up in the keepers hands. Woodford had a push forward and forced a corner which was headed wide of the goal. The half ended with an Heyford corner being taken cleanly by the Woodford Keeper. Heyford started brightly in the second half with Matt Blenford running through with a fantastic solo effort that end in a goal his second 2-0. Woodford chipped away at the Heyford defence but they held firm. Matt Blenford ran through a sea of players and around the keeper but was only able to hit the upright, the ball was cleared but returned beating the Woodford keeper, the headed ball from the Woodford defender ended in the net own goal 3-0. Matt Blenford ran through passing the ball into the net 4-0 As a thunder storm threatened to halt play, Heyford pressed, as now a defeated Woodford tried to keep the Heyford attacks at bay. A free kick taken by Matt Blenford and placed pin point at the far post was headed back across the goal and into the net by Heyford's defender Chris Philpott 5-0. Two more goals scored in extra time one by Jon Crosthwaite and one from substitute Lee Clack finished the game 7-0 As Matt Blenford claimed the match ball he was also awarded the Man of the match trophy by Mr Tony Jarvis who presented the Cup and players mementoes.
