Victory FOR Old Boys in Jersey Cup final
The 101st Jersey Cup final between Heyford Athletic and last
year’s beaten
finalist and pre-match favourites Highfield Old Boys got off to an explosive
start.
Garry Williams gave Heyford the lead after just five minutes, but then just
two minutes later Ian Edge headed Highfield level. And that man Edge was on
hand
again in the 24th minute to head Highfield into the lead.
But their lead was short-lived as it this time it was Heyford’s turn
to bounce back, man-of-the-match Paul Gelatly slotting home from the penalty
spot
to make the half time score 2-2.
In the second half Heyford came closest to breaking the deadlock when John
Varney fired a 40-yard free kick against the post.
After this wake-up call Highfield applied more pressure and
it took a string of fine saves from Heyford’s young keeper Kevin Fry
to keep them out. However, with extra time looming, Graham Anderson broke
down the right wing
and his cross found an unmarked John Hall who rifled home the winner for Highfield
from 10-yards.
