DOUR STALEMATE IN JERSEY FINAL

The Jersey Cup was packed away, unpresented, at the end of a gruelling goalless draw on Easter Monday between Jersey giants Ardley and Charlton.

Gusts of wind, hail and rain on a muddy Bicester pitch prevented much attractive teamwork or individual brilliance and either side allowed the other space.

Most of the play was at the town end, which Ardley defended in the first half. Wayne Beasley got down well to hold a Barry Cooper shot, as Charlton held sway but there were few other real chances.

Ten minutes after the break, Cooper was clean through at the other end but his shot went just wide of the post. Ardley had an early chance when Andy Wells blasted a free kick, but he only won a corner which came to nothing.

Ardley substituted forward Rob Porter for midfielder Martin Howe with 25 minutes to go, and Porters fresh legs soon had Derek Thomas stretching to save Charlton. Thomas had a scare when he sprinted out of his area, only to have a defender block his path to the ball, but a desperate chase and tackle cleared the danger.

Charlton defended staunchly as Pete Gough kept the ball from Porter’s itching toes and Duncan Cooper covered well to clear the ball away from Ardley’s most dangerous forward Clive Winstone.

The replay will be on Friday, April 18th at Kirtlington (5-30pm).
