Marsh Gibbon lived on equal terms with Charlton United for just 20 minutes of the Lord Jersey Cup final on Easter Monday, then four Barry Cooper goals put a seal on the contest.

Charlton won 6-1, receiving the cup from Dickie Offord, Jersey vice-chairman, and taking it back to the village for the third year running. A good natured crowd of over 600 enjoyed the sunshine on the town ground.

Marsh should have scored in the opening part of the game, but the Charlton defence held firm. Barry Cooper then struck, beating the goalkeeper to a 50-50 ball. Charlton were 4-0 up inside ten minutes. Cooper being given more generous space than his lethal finish requires, and scoring all four.

In the second half, the hard ground and determination took its toll in injuries to both teams. Marsh recovered briefly when a clearance rebounded off a Charlton player, and with the defence stranded, Mark Leonard tapped the ball into the net.

Charlton regained the initiative, Alan Ford getting to the line and crossing for Melvin Markham to make it 5-1. Ford was injured after the cross and stretchered off. Despite this blow to the team, Markham made it 6-1 and an emphatic win.
