The Lord Jersey Cup replay was won 2-1 by Charlton United to make a great double to go with their league championship title.

The replay with Piddington, switched to Fritwell’s ground began in lively fashion. Barry Cooper’s through ball was wasted as Charlton’s Melvin Markham and Dave Nutt fell over each other, and play quickly went to the other end of the pitch. There goalkeeper Thomas hesitated, allowing Pete Winstone to get the ball, and gain a corner. Winstone stooped down to head the corner into the net to earn Piddington the lead.

Piddington then had the best chances. Another Winstone shot was parried, Eddie Nix twice failing to hit home the lose ball. Tony Smith battled through on his own but lost out in the tackle and the appeal for a penalty was turned down. Never slow to go forward, Charlton broke through Markham, Nutt out-jumped the keeper for a high ball, and as players crowded the six-yard box the ball fell to Barry Cooper, who chose his spot and shot the equaliser shortly before half time.

Charlton’s Graham Cooper’s close marking of Paddy Horner was one factor in Piddington’s increasing inability to use the midfield, and their attempts became hurried. Both sides had goals ruled offside and after Jimmy Darch of Piddington had blocked one vicious Barry Cooper shot, Micky Ridge wriggled through to gain a corner at the other end.
Charlton’s winner was a long Brian Watson shot into a wide gap on the left of the goal, a goal all the way.
