Charlton United and Piddington battled to a 1-1 draw in a disappointing Lord Jersey Cup final on Easter Monday.
The opening moments promised a tantalising contest. Four minutes from kick-off, Charlton’s Dave Nutt rode a tackle out on the right and hammered the ball across. Piddington legs flailed in vain and Paul Woodward shot his team into the lead. Minutes later Piddington won a corner and John Nelson had a shot from midfield swept wide of the post by the wind. Then the match went quiet, with the odd flash of good football but too often the players resorted to aimless kicking.

On the half hour, a high Charlton back pass failed to carry, and Derek Thomas, quick off his line, had to let it bounce. It flew up and Pete Winstone, whose enthusiastic hustling sometimes approached lunacy, bravely challenged and got a equalising header.

A stretcher was brought out for the injured scorer but he was shortly back on the field, where he was booked for a follow-through after a tackle. At the interval, Piddington seemed to have the edge.

In the second half, Charlton pushed up. However their best moves were broken down. Piddington battled back, gaining a stranglehold on midfield, and Charlton again resorted to aimless long kicks, hoping Barry Cooper would snatch the winner. Piddington chances were cleared off the line, and on the break, Cooper was twice through before shooting wide of the far post. Bob Price received a nasty cut eye ten minutes from the end. Charlton again showed well at the end, but a draw was a fair result. The replay will be on May 2nd at Fritwell.
