A large crowd who came to the Jersey Cup final replay yesterday were treated to an excellent competitive match.

Hethe took an early lead when Wickens beat keeper Monk and angled a shot over the line, Winstone’s head made sure.

Despite this setback, Steeple Aston won far more play in the first half. Hethe’s midfield was subdued for a change by Steeple’s dominance and O’Sullivan showed off some tricky skills. When Hethe failed to clear Gubbins flighted the ball form the right for Cox to put away. Steeple failed to take more of their chances, including a penalty, which Leach saved.

After the interval Gubbins had a certain goal palmed off the line before Steeple really came under pressure. Winstone ran tirelessly and was rewarded when his header regained the lead. Steeple equalised was applauded all round the ground. Full back Andrew Bedding ran the length of the field beating four tackles, and shot past the keeper.

The score remained at 2-2 at the end of 90 minutes, but Hethe outlasted Steeple, Wickens scrambling one in, and Tait making it 4-2. It was a match they could be proud of winning.
