Merton won the Jersey Cup for the first time by 3-2 over Heyford Athletic before a crowd of 750 at the Bicester Town ground on Monday.
The victory was a personal triumph for Tony Bracewell, the Merton striker, who scored all three goals for his team and saw a possible fourth from his second penalty saved by Rapolo, the Heyford keeper.

Heyford scored first when Lynock, following up, headed in a clearance by the Merton keeper. But Bracewell equalised after a further five minutes and put Merton in front from a penalty shortly afterwards.
At half-time the score remained the same as both teams missed further chances at goal.

Merton had more of the play in the second half and after Heyford had missed they were awarded a second penalty. Rapolo saved Bracewell’s spot kick but the striker made amends later when he converted a centre from Bustin to bring the score up to 3-1.

Heyford, however, were not finished and D. Brock should have reduced Merton’s lead when he was put clear on the left, but the keeper saved well.
With 10 minutes to go Hillsdon headed in Heyford’s second goal but they failed to add any further score and Merton ran out worthy winners.
Mr Vic Redfern, the president of Bicester Sports Club, presented the trophy and replicas.

After Merton’s success in the Jersey Cup their reserves took to the field to meet Islip reserves in the Mann Cup. But they did not have luck their way and lost 3-0

However, it was not until the second half that Islip scored through Smith, Steele and Marcham to gain a comfortable win and to deny the Merton club a further cup win.
