The attendance and football at the 74th Jersey Cup final on Easter Monday were disappointing. Played on the Bicester Town ground annually for the past 27 years Monday’s match produced little to enthuse over.

It was the 13th Jersey Cup final for Heyford Athletic, who had previously won the trophy five times. The other finalist, Bloxham, are comparative newcomers to Jersey F.A. football, in which they have done very well in a short time.

The first half-an-hour was a period of unimaginative football with isolated breaks and at each end relieving the monotony.

Bloxham had a period of pressure just before the interval, but Heyford opened the scoring through Norman Brock. There was little improvement in the standard of play in the second half. Both goals had narrow escapes, but there were few constructive movements and a great deal of aimless kicking by both teams.

Bloxham in the main had the better of the exchanges but their finishing was weak and the bustling and big kicking of Curtis nonplussed the forwards.
Bloxham unsuccessfully claimed a penalty when W. Lane was unceremoniously brought down, but instead referee Bunce gave an indirect free kick.

Rodney Brock made the miss of the day when he placed the ball wide of an empty net when keeper Lewis had run yards out from his goal. The one goal scored in the first half sufficed to give Heyford Athletic the cup for the sixth time since the cup was formed in 1950.

The cup and mementoes were presented by Jersey F.A. president Eric Roderick. The three Brocks in the Heyford team are all related and three players have appeared in several Jersey Cup finals, Johnnie Varney, Bernie Brock, and Alan Badby. Approaching 40, Johnnie Varney now holds seven Jersey Cup winners’ medals and five runners-up. He gained his first medal with Heyford United when they won the cup in 1949-50.
