HEYFORD ATHLETIC’S hopes of winning the Jersey Cup for the third successive season a feat only accomplished were dashed on Saturday evening in the replayed final at Bicester, and K.E.T.A. achieved their aim of winning the trophy for the first time. Another large crowd witnessed the replay in which good football was at a minimum, but there was plenty of excitement.

K.E.T.A. were greatly encouraged by a goal inside five minutes. Evans pushed the ball past Cuss who had delayed his advanced from goal. Heyford were not long in arrears, for after Bernard Brock had landed the ball on top of the net he let the ball run on to Brian Keys in another attack, and the outside-left shot into the net. For a long time the defences were on top. Bill Faulkner for Heyford and Eddie McDonnel for K.E.T.A. being prominent in breaking up attacks, but K.E.T.A. suddenly embarked on an all out attack and when Terry Chaplin split the defence with a pass, Evans drove high into the net for his second goal.

The Bicester team had the better of the exchanges for a while. Cuss saving smartly at the foot of the post from Evans. The Athletic’s powerful clearances kept their opponents at bay, and neither side could claim any real advantage up to half-time.

K.E.T.A. launched some spirited attacks on resuming, Evans, Chaplin and Woods in turn went close. Their enthusiasm, however, led them into a number of free kicks, and one or two of these, close in were dangerous. Heyford were full of fight, and with Badby and McGarry two tenacious wing halves, and Rose and Angell clearing their lines unassumingly, but never-the-less effectively the K.E.T.A. attack was contained.

The Heyford forward line were also unable to break down the strong defence put up by Parrott. Reaich and McConnell and veteran Bernie Brock and his colleague Keys were given a little room, but both needed a lot of watching. The Athletic lived up to their reputation as cup fighters, but they lacked steadiness at the crucial moments and allowed themselves to be harassed and hustled into faulty shooting.

The Heyford boys worked and ran and K.E.T.A. gave away a number of corners and a free kicks in defending their goal. Alec McPhee, not the Alec of past days, missed a glorious chance of an equaliser, and K.E.T.A. were made to fight every inch of the way. A breakaway in the closing minutes, and Terry Chaplin settled the issue 3-1 for K.E.T.A.
