Middle Barton found in the Jersey Cup Final at Bicester on Easter Monday, that experience counts for nothing if a team hasn’t the “legs” to cope with it. They looked a very tired team at times against the younger Islip side and were well beaten long before the end, despite the fact that Islip had only ten fit men for the second half. Several of the Middle Barton side playing on Monday were “veterans” in terms of soccer playing season.

An early goal by outside left Sherrall gave Islip a good start, but although they were on top for some time, their forwards lacked finish, and Panting kept goal well for Barton. Islip’s defence was not extended against feeble attacks, but on one occasion Pete Bauckham just failed to reach a centre from the right. Brian Beesley converted a centre from the right to give a 2-0 lead to Islip, who then lost their outside-right Allen injured in a collision with the goalkeeper. Middle Barton were a poor and tired –looking team and were seldom in the game. They were awarded a penalty, but Gascoigne shot hopelessly wide from the spot.

Islip easily held their own in the second half, despite having Allen limping about at centre-forward, but as so often happens with an injured player he once had an open goal presented to him, but could not reach the ball in time. Both goalkeepers were not in any difficulty with the work they had to do. Panting being the busier of the two. Middle Barton were awarded a second penalty, and this time Stewart scored. Islip, however, were not worried and continued the better team until eventually Sherrell put the issue beyond doubt with his second goal.
