Mighty Middle Barton had the shock of their lives in the 60th final of this old established competition at Bicester on Easter Monday. A crowd of nearly 1,200 saw outsider’s Steeple Aston provide the shocks.

Middle Barton, holders of the trophy were hot favourites to retain it for another twelve months. Many considered that Monday’s final was a mere formality in which Barton would brush aside the opposition to add the Lord Jersey Cup to their list of successful performances this season.

Three cheers then for gallant Steeple Aston. They stunned the Barton supporters by taking a shock lead just before the interval and repeated the dose in the 50th minute to lead 2-0.

But at this stage Aston faltered. Barton with defeat and not a little humiliation facing them hit back in championship style and wiped out Aston’s well-deserved lead to force a replay.

In the end it was Steeple Aston who were struggling to avoid defeat. Steeple Aston’s two-goal lead inside fifty minutes was due to their fast moving attack, which often had a shaky Barton in trouble.

The formidable Barton attack lead by Dempsey, was well contained by the Aston rearguard.

With wingers B. Keys and F. Keys live-wires of the Aston attack goals looked certainly, but it was not until just before half-time that inside left James scored.

Barton’s next scoring chance came when a Dempsey power drive crashed against the crossbar with Sorrell helpless. Three minutes after the interval B. Keys scored after a fierce struggle in the Barton goalmouth.

Barton’s revival soon had the Steeple Aston defence back-pedalling. A long range shot by R. Cox made the score 2-1 and in spite of some great work by Sorrell. Barton got back on terms when Bauckman cut in to score.

The replay has been fixed for Saturday April 19th at Bicester Sports Ground.
